Norristown, PA - Steve Owens, Jr. captured the PPGA Publinks Championship at Jeffersonville GC with a 3-under par round of 67.  Owens, from John F. Byrne GC, made three birdies on the inward nine after an even par start on the outward nine.  The champion birdied holes ten and eleven to get to 2-under for the round and birdied the difficult 220 yard, par-3, fifteenth to reach 3-under.  Owens would finish with three straight pars to post his winning total of 67.
     Two shots back and in second place was defending champion Travis Gahman from Bridgewater College in Bridgewater Virginia.  The junior-to-be from Souderton, PA started in the afternoon wave and was quick to catch Owens at 3-under with birdies at one, three and seven.  The spot atop the leaderboard was short lived, though, as Gahman bogied three holes in succession starting on the ninth.  He finished with a birdie at the tough 436 yard par-4 17th to get to 1-under for the day and a par at the last would be good enough for a solo second.  Gahman has already had many high points in this young season.  He set the single season scoring average at Bridgewater College, won the Lakeview Amateur in Harrisonburg, Va. two weeks ago and last week qualified for the USGA Public Links Championship to be contested at the Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center in Greensboro North Carolina.
     Finishing third in only his second PPGA event was 2000 GAP Patterson Cup champion Greg O'Connor.  Like Gahman, O'Connor started strong and looked poised to make a run at the championship.  With birdies at holes four and six O'Connor turned at 2-under.  A bogey at eleven dropped him to 1-under but he quickly got that shot back with a birdie on the 197-yard, par 3, 12th.  A bogey at the thirteenth again dropped him to 1-under until a bogey at the par-5 last pushed him back to even par for the day.
     Andrew Jaskel, Middletown CC, was alone in fourth with a 2-over par round of 72.  Tied for 5th at 73 was Mike Carr of Plymouth CC and Shawn Lavin of Cobbs Creek GC.  
     There was a three-way tie for 7th at 74 between Mark Breslin of Lancaster Host GC, three-time PPGA Publinks champion Buck Jones and 2009 Gap Mid-Am Champion Mike Brown.
     In the 50-59 Senior division, 2006 PPGA Senior Open Amateur champion Mike Dutill emerged victorious with a round of 3-over par 73.  After birdies at eleven and fifteen, Dutill stood at 1-over for the round.  Bogies on two of the last three holes set the winner back to three over for the day but that was still good enough to best the 50-59 division by three strokes.  2008 Philadelphia Open Amateur Champion Tony Carroll was second at 76.
     There was a 3-way tie for third at 78 between Jim Durante, Meadow Brook GC, Ken Gaskill, Ramblewood GC and Tom faro, John F. Byrne GC.
     Steve Owens, Sr. bested the field in the 60+ age group with a round of 75 which started with birdies on the first three holes.  After the quick start, Owens managed to grind his way through the rest of the course and finish one stroke ahead of Kimberton GC's, Bob Fritz.  It was the second win of the day for the Owens family in which three generations competed, (Steve Owens III shot 84 to finish T-37 in his first PPGA event).  Owens Sr. was also victorious in the net division.
     Fritz had his chances to wrestle the win away from Owens Sr.  Playing solid golf all day Fritz was 4-over for the day heading to the last but an untimely double bogey left him one shot behind Owens.  Ray Nyahay finished third at 77 and Ken Hayman finished fourth with 78.  Rounding out the top five in the 60+ division was Doug Surine from Meadow Brook GC with a 79.
     Behind Owens, Sr. in the Net Division was Jon DeMinico of Middletown CC, Ray Nyahay of Linfield National GC and Dan Falcone.
