  Final Results
Limerick, PA - Roger Stone and David Kimbley topped a talented field at the first event of the PPGA season yesterday at Turtle Creek GC in Limerick.  This is the second championship at Turtle Creek for Stone and Kimbley as the pair also won in 2008.  The winners started slowly with a bogey on the 373 yard first, but after the slip-up, they would make up 10 strokes in relation to par over the remaining 17 holes.  Stone struck on the 2nd hole, sinking a clutch eagle putt that quickly got the winning duo in red numbers.  But that was just the beginning.  Kimbley played steady golf all day, carding a 1-under par 71 to top all match play qualifiers.  Along with his eagle, Stone would add six more birdies on the day to help the winning pair to a record setting performance of 9-under par 63.
     After birdies at the 3rd, 5th and 7th holes, the 2008 champions turned in 4-under par 32.  They would add birdies on ten, twelve and thirteen.  But the tournament was far from over.  Playing alongside Stone and Kimbley was 2010 PPGA Publinks Champion, Steve Owens, Jr., John F. Byrne GC and Chris Thude from Torresdale-Frankford CC and they were trying to keep pace.  After Owens converted a birdie on the 376 yard, par-4, fourteenth, the eventual runners-up were at 6-under par, one stroke back of Stone and Kimbley.  But Stone and Kimbley proved too much as they posted birdies on the final two holes to complete their stellar round.
     Buck Jones and Jim Yenser, looking for their second PPGA Better-Ball Championship in the last three years, were poised to make a charge after starting with birdies on each of the first four holes.  A bogey at the 533 yard, par-5 eighth would only set back Jones and Yenser momentarily as they quickly followed with a birdie on the 197 yard, par-3, ninth to turn at 4-under par 32.  Jones and Yenser managed two birdies on the back nine but struggled to get enough momentum going to make a serious charge.  A bogey at the home hole would drop Jones and Yenser into a third place tie with Mike Brown, Lookaway GC and Robert Galbreath, Jr of Huntingdon Valley CC.
     Brown, coming off arguably the most dominant year of any PPGA player, was eager to return to action on the Publinks circuit.  In 2010 Brown captured an unprecendented double by winning the "Player of the Year" award in both the PPGA and the Golf Association of Philadelphia.  In addition to winning the Philadelphia Open Amateur Championship at Cobbs Creek GC and the Fall Classic at Jeffersonville GC, Brown won the Philadelphia Open, qualified for both the US Amateur and the US Mid-Amateur, advancing to match play in the US Mid-Am and also posted a 4th place finish at the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship.  Teamed with Brown, Robert Galbreath, Jr. made his PPGA tournament debut and looked to capture his first PPGA title to go along with his already decorated resume which includes four GAP Junior Amateur titles.  Brown and Galbreath got off to a slow start, standing at one over par for the round after a bogey at the 449 yard par-4, sixth.  That bogey seemed to flip a switch as Brown posted birdies on the next two and the team birdied six of the last twelve to get to 5-under par and settle for a T-3 finish with Jones and Yenser.
     David Shields and Dan Osada posted a 4-under par round of 68 to finish fifth.  Shields, narrowly missing advancing out of the US Open sectional qualifier at Applebrook GC last week by one shot, looked to carry over the solid play to Turtle Creek.  Shields and Osada started fast with birdies on one and two.  After stringing together ten straight pars, Shields and Osada gained some momentum after an eagle at the 512 yard, par-5, 13th and a birdie at the 169 yard, par-3 fifteenth.  A bogie at the last would drop Shields and Osada out of a tie for third with Jones and Yenser, and Brown and Galbreath.
     In the senior division, Jim Durante and Harry Giannopoulos, both of Meadow Brook GC, played steady golf all day and carded a round of 4-under par 68 to win by 3 shots over Mike Harms and Hank Church, Cobbs Creek GC.  Durante and Giannopoulos, starting on the back nine, posted consecutive birdies on 13 and 14, combined with seven pars to turn in 2-under par, 34.  A bogey at the third followed a birdie at the second and the eventual champions were back to 2-under par.  After pars at four through seven, Durante and Giannopoulos felt they needed to finish strong to have a chance.  With birdies at the last two, the winning duo secured their winning margin.
     In the Super Senior division (60+) Ken Gaskill, Ramblewood GC and Jon Mabry, Moorestown Field Club posted a round of even par 72 to sweat out a one shot victory over defending champions, Naz Gagliardi and Jack Donnelly, Bensalem CC and Bob Fritz and Tom Daymont of Ble Bell CC.
