Mike Brown, competing is his first Philadelphia Open Amateur Championship, led wire-to-wire in capturing the 38th Annual Championship by six shots over four-time champion Chris Fieger and Greg Jarmas.  Brown, the 2009 GAP Mid-Amateur Champion and the first Publinks player to capture a GAP major, was the only player in the field to post three scores of even-par or better.  Brown was consistent in the first round, playing through a 45 minute rain shower, as he posted 15 pars against 2 birdies and a double bogey.  Brown shared the lead at even par after one round with defending champion, Mike Owsik.
The weather, a minor issue in round one, was the story of day two.  Players began play Saturday morning in a drizzle, which became increasingly steadier as the morning wore on.  Play was halted at 9:39 AM as course conditions became unplayable.  After a five hour weather delay, play resumed at 3:45 under blue skies, and players were eager to take advantage of the soft conditions.  Five groups remained on the course, including the final three groups in the senior championship, as play was called for the day because of darkness at 8:27 PM.
Brown, playing alongside Jarmas, the 2009 PIAA State runner-up, and Brian Fisher who captured the Publinks Better-Ball earlier in the year, finished round 2 as darkness was falling with a 2nd round score of 70.  The two-day total of 1-under was good enough for a four shot lead over Fieger, Pete Boylan and David Shields.  Shields posted the best score of the tournament, 4-under par 67, in round two.  Shields started in the drizzle in the morning and was three-under par for the round through 11 holes when play was halted.  With a birdie at the par-5 17th, and a par at the last, the stellar second round catapulted Shields from a tie for 23rd after round one into the final group alongside Brown and Boylan.
The final round began as scheduled at 7:00 and the five groups remaining on the golf course to complete round 2 resumed play at 8:00.  Brown, holding a four shot lead, began the final round with bogies at the first two which breathed life into his closest pursuers.  After another bogey at the 194-yard, par-3 6th to fall to three-over for the day, Brown was struggling to find his game.  A birdie at the short 264-yard uphill par-4 seemed to help but an eagle by Jarmas on the same hole cut Brown’s lead to just two.  After a double bogey on the next by Brown, the two were tied with 10 holes to go with Scott Bergson climbing to within one of the leaders after posting a front-9 score of 31.
Brown parred the 9th for four over on the outward nine but found his game before it was too late with birdies on ten and eleven to once again seize control of the championship.  Jarmas bogied ten and twelve as did Bergson to fall four and five shot back, respectively.  After pars at twelve, thirteen and fourteen and sensing the finish line, Brown shifted into high gear and he cemented the tournament away with three successive birdies on fifteen, sixteen and seventeen.  Only a bogey at the last would keep Brown from another sub-par round as he fired 4-under par on the more difficult of the nines for an even-par round of 71.
Bergson finished fourth at 6-over par, one shot behind Fieger and Jarmas.  2006 Open Amateur Champion Lance Oberparleiter finish in a tie for fifth with defending and four-time champion, Mike Owsik.
In all, ten past champions competed in this year’s event including 1978 champion, Doug Surine.  After stepping away from the game for fifteen years to raise his children, 2010 marked Surine’s return to competitive golf and the first time competing in the Open Amateur since 1985.  Though Surine struggled in the championship to regain his old form he is enjoying being back in the competitive arena and looks forward to many more Open Amateurs in the years ahead.

In the senior division of the Open Amateur it was Bill Turner who captured the championship.  With rounds of 74 and 77, the 2008 Senior Open Amateur Champion posted a three-shot victory over 2008 Philadelphia Open Amateur Champion Tony Carroll, and six time Senior Open Amateur class Champion Ken Gaskill.  2009 PPGA Senior Co-Player of the Year, Mike Harms was fourth, five shots behind Turner.  Tied for fifth were Glen Schreiner and Tom Faro.
