  2010 PPGA Fall Classic
  Final Results
Norristown, PA - The storybook season continued at Jeffersonville GC for Mike Brown as he teamed with Everett Farr to successfully defend their Fall Classic title.  The Fall Classic features two-man teams and three different six hole formats.  The first six holes is contested in a two-person scramble format, the middle six holes are better-ball of partner and the last six are select drive-alternate shot.  Last year’s championship was contested at Kimberton GC and the winning pair equaled their margin of victory, twoshots, this year at Jeffersonville.  The win caps a season for Brown in which he was the first player ever to capture Player of the Year honors in both the Philadelphia Publinks Golf Association and the Golf Association of Philadelphia.  En route to capturing the POY honors Brown won the Philadelphia Open Amateur Championship, the GAP Open, and now the PPGA Fall Classic.  Brown also qualified for two USGA events, the US Amateur and the US Mid-Am where he qualified for Match Playand he also placed 4thoverall in the Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship.
At Jeffersonville, Brown and Farr had their sights set on repeatingand came out of the gates swinging with birdies on four of the first six holes in the scramble format.  A bogey at the ninth and the eventual winners turned in 32, three under par.  The team quickly bounced back with a birdie on the 10th to get back to four under and seemingly in control.  But bogies on three of the next four holes and the tournament was up for grabs.  With a 1-under par, 69, posted by Steve Meier and Zach LaVoie, leading in the clubhouse, Brown and Farr knew what their target was if they wanted to repeat.  Playing alongside Brown and Farr was Steve Owens, Jr., winner of the Publinks Championship earlier in the season, and partner Chris Thude.  Owens and Thude birdied the 16th hole to quietly draw even with Brown and Farr at 1-under par with two holes remaining.  But as was the case in the Philadelphia Open Amateur when Brownbirdied five of the first eight holes on the difficult back nine to coast to victory, Brown proved why he was the Player of the Year as he and Farr birdied the last two holes for a score of 67 and their two shot victory.
Meier and LaVoie were out early on the cold blustery day with wind gusts measuring up to 40 mph.  The co-runners-up started with pars on the first five holes before registering their first birdie at the par-5, sixth.  After getting back to two-under for the tournament at the 10th, Meier and LaVoie sandwiched a birdie at the difficult par 4, 17th with two bogies to finish at 1-under par, 69 for the tournament.  Owens and Thude started slowly and could only muster even par through the scramble format with one birdie and one bogey.  After a bogey on the 7thto fall behindBrown and Farr by five shots, Owens and Thude put somegood swings together to contend for the championship.  After drawing even with Brown and Farr with a birdie at 16, Owens and Thude could only manage pars on the final two holes and had to settle for a T-2 finish.
Domenic Ritorto and Dominic DiPrinzio of Bellewood GCfinished 4thwith a score of even par 70.  The Walnut Lane pair of Bill Erskine and David Shields posted a score of 71 to round out the top five.
In the senior division,it was PPGA Senior Player of the Year runner-up, Tony Carroll and partner Steve Hanson who put on an impressive performance of golf to win by seven shots over Bruce Macartney and Don Mackey of Center Square GC.  Carroll and Hanson posted six birdies including three in a row at 10, 11 and 12, against 4 bogies for their winning tally of 2-under par 68.  Macartney and Mackey, playing alongsideCarroll and Hanson were in contention and even par for the day through fourteen holes, but bogies at 15, 16 and 17 and a double bogey at 18 left the runners-up well behind the leaders.  Two teams tied at 76 for third place, Greg Gaul, Merion GC and partner Tom Mallouk of Lookaway GC and George Henninger and Marc McCairns, both of Huntingdon Valley CC.
The 2010 Fall Classic was a historic Championship for the PPGA as it marked the first time a female golfer teed it up and competed with the men.  Laura Fisher, a recent Bucknell graduateand Futures Tour hopeful, teamed with her brother Robert to mark the momentous occasion.  The Fishers started slowly with five bogies on the front nine but settled into the round and posted an even par back nine over the more difficult of the formats.  Their score of 75 was good enough for a T-17 finish.
